How to Identify a Counterfeit Cartier Watch

Cartier is known throughout the world for manufacturing elegant timepieces. Cartier watches are a status symbol many can't afford. Cartier watches cost anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000. For that reason, they are one of the most duplicated watches in the world. One of the easiest ways to spot a fake Cartier watch is to compare the weight of a real Cartier watch with that of the watch in question. Cartier watches are much heavier than their counterfeit counterpart. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

View the caseback of the watch in question. Remove the caseback and search for a "Cartier" inscription on the watch movement. All genuine Cartier watches have "Cartier" inscribed on the watch movement.

    • 2

Look for glue on the watch crown. Many Cartier replicas are cheaply made, and may have the Cartier logo glued to the crown of the watch. Inspect for uneven edges on your watch crown. Genuine Cartier watches are known for fine craftsmanship and won't have such inherent defects.

    • 3

Check the luminosity of the watch. Many Cartier watches use LumiNova, which is a glow-in-the-dark substance that allows you to view time in the dark. Counterfeit Cartier watches may not use a luminous substance of any kind. Replica Cartier watches don't glow as bright, nor does the duration of the glow last as long as authentic Cartier watches.

    • 4

Check for spelling errors. Since many replica Cartier watches are produced by individuals who don't speak English as their natural language, spelling errors are bound to surface. Specific areas to check for misspellings are the caseback and dial of the watch in question.

    • 5

Inspect the watch dial. Dust, hairs, fingerprints and other contaminants on the dial and face of the watch indicate the watch is not authentic. Authentic Cartier watches are free of such imperfections.
