How to Find the Price History Records for Houses

You may not be able to get a home's previous sale price from a Realtor or the local assessor. Transactions are recorded at the county clerk's office, but there is no requirement for noting the listing information as a public record. Tracking down the original sale prices involves more digging. You can get at least a partial history of the property's previous listings though newspaper archives if the property was advertised in the real estate section.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the websites of local newspaper. Enter the address of the property into the search field. If nothing comes up, contact the paper and ask an employee if the paper publishes real-estate transactions. If so, ask if they have an archive service for both news and real estate classified listings. Either way, there will be listings of real estate transactions and sale prices.

    • 2

Search real estate websites, local and national, for listings by community or ZIP code. According to Trulia Real Estate Search, brokers and realtors will often note when a home price has been reduced and how much the latest price has been discounted from its original listing.

    • 3

Visit the county clerk's/recorder's office. Provide the address and ask for the real-estate transaction records. Sale prices will be listed here. You can trace previous sales using the deed books in the county clerk's office. The transaction records are organized by date.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Association of Realtors for a city, county or region track listings and can tell you if average listing prices by ZIP code, neighborhood or street are higher or lower than they were in the previous year.
