How Do I Change the Default Photo Viewer in Windows XP?

The default photo viewer in Windows XP is “Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.” If you have a different program that you'd prefer to use, set a new default photo viewer in Windows XP with a simple process that will change how Windows opens specific image file types. By opening the Control Panel of your computer, you can quickly reset the defaults for your computer system.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Control Panel then select "Classic View."

    • 2

Click “Folder Options” then click the “File Types” tab.

    • 3

Scan through the list of file extensions and click on an image file extension that your computer currently opens with the Picture and Fax Viewer.

    • 4

Look beneath the list pane and you will see the details listed for that file extension, including the program that currently opens it. Click “Change” to change the default program.

    • 5

Select a different default program from the list of suitable programs. Highlight the program you desire and place a checkmark in the box to the left of “Always use the selected program…” Click “OK.”

    • 6

Repeat Steps 3 through 5 to change the default program for other image file extensions. Image file extensions you may wish to change include BMP, GIF, JPEG, JPG and PNG.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of opening the Control Panel to change the default viewer, right-click an image and select “Open With,” then "Choose Program." Choose the image viewing program you wish to use and make sure you place a checkmark in the box to the left of “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.” Click “OK.”
