How to Check a Food Stamps Balance

Food stamp programs are federally funded programs that provide money for low-income and no-income families to buy food. Food stamps used to be issued on paper stamps, which is how they got their name. Today, food stamps are distributed on cards that can be used electronically at various stores and ATM machines. Food stamp holders can check the balance on their cards at any time.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the 800 number on the back of the food stamp card. Call the number and follow the prompts. You will be asked to punch your account number in using your telephone keypad. Listen for the balance.

    • 2

Log on to the Internet. If you do not have a computer or the Internet, you can use one for free at your local library. You will be required to present your library card in order to use their computers.

    • 3

Go to your state's online food stamp program website (see Resources). Register if you have not done so already.

    • 4

Enter your log-in information or enter your food stamp card account number along with the pin you set up when you got the card. Your account will come up and you will be able to see your balance.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask your case worker how much money you are getting each month and on which day the funds will arrive on your card. This will allow you to have an idea of when your balance is set to increase.

  • You cannot buy nonfood items with your food stamp card.
