How to Clean Black Fender Flares

Black plastic fender flares are used on a number of different vehicles, including the Jeep Wrangler, a sturdy and dependable off-road vehicle, as well as on older cars like the VW GTIs that were produced in the 1980s and early 1990s. Because black fender flares are made from plastic and not metal, they tend to dry out over time, and end up looking dull and flat if not properly cared for.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse the flares with water and hose, ensuring that you rinse the areas where the flares meet the metal bodywork so that any dirt and debris will be loosened and removed.

    • 2

Wash the flares with a mixture of soap and water. Use a wash mitt or a towel and thoroughly wash the flare so that all of the dirt is removed. Dry the flare with a clean terry-cloth towel so that there is no lint left on the flare.

    • 3

Spray plastic and vinyl dressing (see Resource) liberally onto the flares. Let the dressing soak into the flares for a minute or so, and then buff the dressing into the flares until the deep black color is restored to the flares. After the dressing has soaked in for a few minutes, go back and make sure the dressing was applied consistently to the surface of the flares. Reapply the dressing as needed.

    • 4

Maintain the look of the flares by periodically washing the flares and then preserving the shine of the black finish by applying vinyl dressing.
