Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a zip tool from a home improvement center. This tool costs under $5 and is designed specifically for siding removal. The tool features a flat hook on the end that is used to detach the siding.

    • 2

Slide the zip tool under the corner lip of the uppermost panel. Use a curving motion to hook the zip tool under the siding panel. There is a small notch under the panel, although you will likely not be able to see it. You can feel the notch as you are working the zip tool under the panel. Start at the top of the house and work your way down.

    • 3

Pull down on the zip tool while simultaneously pulling it towards you once it has hooked onto the notch. This will release the panel from the one below.

    • 4

Move to the other end of the siding panel and repeat the process with the zip tool to unhook that end from the panel below. The siding panel will now be hanging freely. On most siding there is one hook at each end of the siding panel.

    • 5

Lift up the siding panel with your hands to expose the nail strip. Use the claw of a hammer to remove each nail from the nail strip. Pull down on the piece of siding to completely detach it.

    • 6

Continue this entire process to remove the siding from the rest of the home, working on one panel at a time. Double check the surface once all of the siding has been removed and pull any remaining nails that may have been missed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear heavy-duty work gloves when pulling the siding off with your hands. This will protect your hands from injury.

  • Work on one siding panel at a time, moving from one side of the panel to the other. It is necessary to work from the top down, as each panel is connected to the panel above.
