How to Attend a Business Meeting

Business meetings can give you insight into the company, updates on its state of affairs and a chance to share your input. A business meeting is the best circumstance to be a proactive employee, but it's also a place where your behavior will be watched closely. With upper management and colleagues surrounding you, a meeting is the perfect time to show your professionalism. Whether you are giving a presentation or listening to one, appropriate behavior is essential.

Instructions

    • 1

Be punctual. R.S.V.P. to the meeting in a timely manner if a reply is requested. Arrive at least five minutes ahead of the start time to ensure you don't miss anything. Showing up late will interrupt the speaker and cause distraction.

    • 2

Prepare yourself. Study the key points of the meeting, and read the objectives. Know the latest company news and current events. If you will be presenting, make sure you have created visual aids such as PowerPoint presentations and handouts. Turn off all personal electronic devices so as not to cause distraction.

    • 3

Pay attention. When others are speaking, listen closely. You do not want to ask questions that have already been asked or cover a subject that has already been discussed. Take notes on key points to help keep your focus. If you have a question, hold it for when the speaker is done or presents the opportunity for an open forum.

    • 4

Stay for the entire meeting. Leaving early is distracting and often disrespectful. Take the time at the end of the meeting to thank the speaker or pose a question.

    • 5

Follow through. Complete any tasks you were assigned during the meeting to the best of your ability. Review the notes you took, and file them away for reference.
