How to Move the Start Menu Bar

There are dozens of ways in which to personalize your desktop, such as using wallpaper and screensavers, adjusting the size of the icons, hiding icons and moving your Windows start menu toolbar. Typically, the taskbar can be found along the bottom of the screen. However, you can move it to the top, right or left of your screen as well. Moving the menu taskbar is a relatively easy process and you may find that doing so makes using your computer that much easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the "Start" icon to open the Start Menu window.

    • 2

Click on "Control Panel," located along the right side of the Start Menu panel.

    • 3

Click on "Appearance and Personalization" and then "Taskbar and Start Menu." This will bring up the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" box.

    • 4

De-select "Lock the taskbar" by clicking on the box. If it is already de-selected, leave it as is. If you are using Windows Vista, you can also simply lock or unlock the taskbar by right clicking on the toolbar and selecting the appropriate command.

    • 5

Click and hold your cursor on an empty area of the start menu taskbar and begin dragging the taskbar to your preferred location.

    • 6

Return to the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" box and select the "Lock the taskbar" box to lock your start menu bar in place. If you want to experiment with different angles for your taskbar, you can leave the box unchecked. Doing so just means that you can freely drag the taskbar. It will remain in place unless you do so.
