How to Connect a Toilet Tank to a Bowl

Installing a new toilet or replacing an older toilet is not difficult. Take care while handling the toilet bowl and the toilet tank. The porcelain is relatively easy to chip while handling. A do-it-yourself handyman can install the toilet tank onto the toilet bowl in just a few minutes without much difficulty.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Adjustable wrench
  • 2-foot level
  • Place the tank cushion washer onto the toilet bowl.

  • Place the two thick rubber washers onto the tank where the bolts will pass through them to tighten the tank to the bowl.

  • Place the tank onto the bowl carefully so you won't chip the porcelain. Align the two holes that the bolts will pass through to tighten the tank with the matching holes in the toilet bowl.

  • Place a washer on one bolt and slide that bolt through one of the hole in the task. Repeat this step for the other side.

  • Place the other washer onto the end of one of the bolt under the edge of the toilet bowl. Hand-tighten the nuts onto the bolts.

  • Place a 2-foot level across the top of the toilet tank to verify that it is level. Tighten the nuts and bolts down carefully using a flat-head screwdriver and an adjustable wrench. This will compress the thick rubber washer between the tank and the bowl. Alternate between the two nuts and bolts while checking that the tank remains level.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most toilets come with the filler value assembly and waste gasket assembly already attached to the tank. If they are not, it is easier to install them before the tank is attached to the bowl.
  • Do not overtighten the bolts that secure the tank. This can crack the toilet.
