How to Change a PT Cruiser Shifter Knob

Installing an aftermarket shift knob is a popular modification that doesn’t cost too much and is easy to do. A new shift knob made from carbon fiber, stainless steel or aluminum is a great way to instantly upgrade the interior of the retro-styled PT Cruiser. This can be done whether you have a manual- or an automatic-equipped PT Cruiser.

Instructions

Pull the original shift knob straight up off of the gear lever by rocking the shift knob back and forth and pulling up on it. The knob pops on and should just pop off for removal.

    • 2

Use an adjustable wrench and a hammer if the knob does not simply pull off. Wrap a rag around the gear lever to protect it. Set the opening on the wrench so that it is just a little more open than the shift lever. Place the wrench over the rag where it is wrapped around the shift lever just below the shift knob. Tap the wrench lightly with the hammer so that it forces the shift knob off of the lever. Use caution so that you don’t hurt yourself or damage the shift lever or knob.

Remove the shift handle on automatic PT Cruisers by removing the set screw located at the base of the shift handle. Use a small screwdriver to remove the screw. Slide the shift handle up and off the shift lever.

Install the new shift knob by sliding it over the shift lever. The installation method depends on the type of shift knob you are installing. Some knobs will simply pop onto the shift lever. Others will be fastened to the lever with a series of set screws that go around the base of the shift knob and are tightened against the shaft of the lever to secure the knob. Automatic shift handles will install in the same manner as the original shift handle.
