How to Study for the Journeyman Electrician Test
A journeyman electrician can perform many electrical jobs without the supervision of a master electrician. Electricians can get more work and enhance their careers by passing the journeyman electrician test. States administer their own tests for journeyman electricians. An electrician who wishes to take the test needs to find the applicable study resources and make a study plan. He can then improve his chances of passing the test by combining his real-world work experience with academic knowledge acquired from the test resources.

1
Determine state qualification requirements for journeyman electricians. Click on your state at the Contractors-License website (see References). Use the state information to determine testing requirements and reference material for the journeyman electrician test in your state. Get additional information by using the provided contact information for the state office in charge of the test.
-
2
Take electrician courses approved by the state. For example, some states actually require the completion of coursework to take the exam. Ask the state office to determine which courses are approved in that state.
-
-
3
Purchase the reference materials specified by your state. Many states have an open-book policy for electrician tests. Purchase all the materials so you can use them for the test. Take notes and highlight key areas in preparation for using the reference materials on testing day.
-
4
Supplement the reference materials with electrician study guides created for the journeyman electrician exam (see References). Use study guides to streamline the study process and determine the material most likely to appear on the test. However, do not use them as a replacement for official state reference materials.
-
5
Take a live test preparation course (see References). Take advantage of the live instructor by asking questions about the reference material and study guides. Study and prepare questions before attending the course.
-
6
Take online practice tests (see Resources). Taking practice tests allows you to learn additional material and get familiar with the testing format. Read all explanations provided with the answers to clear up any confusion about the questions.

Tips & Warnings
Take at least some of the practice tests under actual testing conditions. Testers who work slowly may need practice to finish within the testing time limits.
Do not schedule to sit for the exam until you are confident that you can pass. Unlike with normal classes, you can wait until you are ready to take the test.
Do not use old editions of reference materials. Older versions do not include any updates in the law or technology.
