DSL Repair

To connect to the Internet via a DSL connection, you need to have DSL Internet service and a DSL modem. If you ever run into problems with your service, it is typically due to an issue with the modem. A cable isn't connected properly or the modem isn't activated. You can usually correct any issue you are having by inspecting the DSL modem.

Instructions

Check the Ethernet cable connection running in from the Ethernet wall outlet to the "WAN" port on the side of the modem. If you pull slightly on the cord you should feel resistance. This means the cable is connected properly. A green light should also appear on the modem next to the WAN port.

    • 2

Look at the "Out" ports on the side of the DSL modem. Like the WAN and Ethernet wall port, the cable needs to be secure. If you are seeing a colored light other then green (such as red, orange or yellow) it means the cable isn't connected properly.

    • 3

Inspect the Ethernet connection running into your computer. If you don't see a green light emitting from the computer where the cable connects it means the cable isn't inserted completely.

    • 4

Power on the computer and the DSL modem. You need both powered on and running before you see all the green lights appear on the two devices.

    • 5

Look on the bottom of the DSL modem. You can find an "http:" address listed. This is the activation and properties listing for the DSL modem. If you haven't activated the DSL modem before and it isn't working, you need to type the http address into your Web browser. Once the activation screen appears type in the default username and password (either "admin" or "0000" for both), then adjust any of the settings you want. This includes changing the password or telling the system you are connecting a wireless router. Once you are done click "Save" at the bottom of the screen to save the settings.

Contact your Internet provider if nothing has corrected the problem. There may be an issue with the signal you are receiving, in which case the company needs to send out a cable technician to fix the issue.
