How to Change the Belt on a Canister Vacuum

Canister vacuum cleaners create suction that picks up dirt. An agitator in a brush attachment, driven by a belt, beats the carpet and sweeps dirt into an airflow passage. Air moves very quickly through the airflow passages carrying the dirt to the dust bag. The dust bag lets air pass through while trapping the dirt. You need to keep the airflow passage clear and free of clogs and you also need to make sure the belt isn't broken, so dirt can enter into the system. If the belt is broken or worn, replace it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the cleaner from the electrical outlet.

    • 2

Remove the light cover and light bulb from the brush attachment, if present. The light cover comes off by pressing in and lifting both sides. The bulb is removed by pushing in and twisting.

    • 3

Unscrew the screws on the base plate and remove the cover. Some covers are attached with tabs---you just insert a screwdriver into the slots to disengage the cover.

    • 4

Free the brush from the base. Twist a screwdriver at the brush supports. Remove the worn belt or the bits of belt if the belt is broken.

    • 5

Replace the belt. Install a new belt over the motor drive and then over the brush sprocket. Snap the brush supports back into place and then snap the cover back on. Replace the screws, light bulb and light cover (if present).

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean the brush support areas while you have the brush disassembled. If the brushes are very worn you can replace them at the same time as replacing the belt.
