How to Protect Ears With a Swim Cap
"Swimmer's ear" is a term used to describe a painful infection of the outer ear canal. Such infections are generally caused by certain forms of bacteria. Swimmers are more likely to get such infections because frequent exposure to water can wash away the oily coating that protects the ear canal. A snug-fitting swim cap can provide a degree of protection against swimmer's ear for the casual swimmer.

1
Choose a swim cap that will snugly cover your ears.
-
2
Wet your hair prior to putting on your swim cap. This will facilitate your efforts to put on the cap and will prevent excessive amounts of air from getting trapped under the cap once it is in place.
-
-
3
Place one hand on each side of the swim cap with your thumbs positioned inside the cap.
-
4
While maintaining the hand position described in Step 2, press the interior portion of the front edge of the swim cap against your forehead.
-
5
With the front of the swim cap in place against your forehead, pull the rest of the cap backward over your head until the back of the cap rests snugly below your hairline at the nape of your neck.
-
6
If needed, tuck your ears and any stray strands of hair inside the swim cap. You are now ready to swim.

Tips & Warnings
If you are experiencing difficulties with putting on your swim cap you may want to sprinkle some baby powder inside the cap. The baby powder will prevent the cap from sticking together and can make it easier to slide the cap over your head.
Failing to take care of your swim cap can cause it to deteriorate quickly. Make sure you dry your swim cap thoroughly before putting it away and try not to leave your swim cap in the sun or in a hot car.
