How to Clean a Breville Cafe Roma

The Breville Cafe Roma is a home espresso machine that uses a single filter and steam wand to make a single cup of espresso coffee or latte from ground espresso or coffee pods. For optimum espresso flavor--and to keep the espresso machine in working order--you must clean and rinse the steam wand, filter and filter holder after every use. The machine's internal and external parts also require regular flushing and cleaning for maintenance. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Clean the Steam Wand

    • 1

Set the selector control in the "standby" position. Turn the power off, and unplug the Cafe Roma espresso machine before proceeding with any cleaning.

    • 2

Turn the selector control to “steam,” then steam clean any milk left inside the wand (the steam will come out of the wand with this control setting). Use the cleaning tool pin to unblock the wand opening. If the wand is still blocked after cleaning, remove the wand tip using the spanner in the cleaning tool.

    • 3

Soak the wand tip in a cup of hot water first, then unblock the wand again with the cleaning tool. Replace the tip on the wand and tighten with the cleaning tool spanner.

Clean the filter, filter holder and brewing head

    • 4

Dispose of the used coffee grounds right after brewing. Rinse the filter, also called a portafilter, and filter holder in the sink. Use a nonabrasive cleaner on the filter and filter holder if they are really dirty. Place the empty filter and filter holder back in the Café Roma espresso machine and run brewed water through the empty filter for a few seconds.

    • 5

Clean the filter holes with a nonmetal scrub brush and mild nonabrasive cleaner, if the holes in the filter are still blocked. Wipe the brewing head with a damp cloth to remove oil and any coffee grounds.

    • 6

Clean the drip tray regularly, especially when the water level indicator shows the drip tray is full. Remove and wash the drip tray grid, steam baffle and water level indicator with a nonabrasive cleaner; dry and replace on the espresso machine.

    • 7

Use a mixture of white vinegar and water to decalcify the Cafe Roma espresso machine every few months, according to the Breville Cafe Roma user manual directions.
