How to Test GMO

With the invention of genetically modification organisms (GMOs), companies have begun altering the genetics of crops to increase yields. These designer seeds often ensure that the crops won't get diseased and will stay fresh on the shelf for longer periods of time. However, there is a downside. Many people claim that the human body can't digest and utilize genetically modified produce. They feel that following an organic, pesticide- and GMO-free diet is the best way to stay healthy.

  • Extraction buffer
  • Beaker
  • Three-temperature thermal cycler

Instructions

    • 1

      Mash up the foodstuff in a blender. Make sure that the food is ground as fine as possible. This will ensure that the DNA extraction will be successful.

      In a glass tube or beaker, add 1 gram of the foodstuff from Step 1 with five drops of an extraction buffer. This will remove the DNA from the rest of the microscopic components.

      Initiate the polymerase chain reaction, which will isolate different parts of DNA so the DNA can be multiplied. Use a three-temperature thermal cycler for this procedure.

      Utilize agarose gel electrophoresis to sort the DNA by its size and charge. Then run the DNA through an electric field machine.

      Look for vectors in the DNA. These vectors are clear indicators that your food is genetically modified.
