How to Use the Changing Chain for a Motorcycle Motion Pro

Based out of California, Motion Pro offers a wide range of specialized tools to assist in maintaining or repairing your motorcycle. One of the more popular items in their lineup are their chain breaker and press tools that speed up the replacement of a motorcycle's drive chain. While these tools are fairly simple to operate, they can easily confuse a first time user.

Instructions

  1. Breaking the Chain

    • 1

Prepare your motorcycle by removing the front sprocket cover. Next, loosen the chain adjusters and the rear wheel's axle nut. Push the wheel forward to further loosen the chain. Remove any chain pin clips from the chain's master link with pliers.

    • 2

Prepare the chain breaker tool by twisting the tool's larger "body" bolt by hand to adjust it to the width of the chain. Twist the inner extracting pin counter-clockwise to retract it into the body bolt, retracting the tip of the pin about 1mm into the body bolt.

    • 3

Slide the chain breaker tool over one of the pins on the chain's master link, placing the master link pin directly under the body bolt's recess. Securely tighten the body bolt over the chain pin so that it will not move.

    • 4

Twist the extracting pin clockwise to extend the pin out through the body bolt. You will feel resistance as the extracting pin comes into contact with the master link's pin. Continue to advance the extractor until the master link pin is forced out of the opposite end of the chain.

    • 5

Repeat on the remaining master link pin.

    Connecting the New Chain

    • 6

Install the new chain onto the motorcycle, looping the chain around both sprockets. Slide the new master link onto the inner edge of the chain to connect the loose ends. Push the link completely into the chain until the pins extend on the outer edge of the chain. Install any O-rings that may have been supplied with the new master link.

    • 7

Slide the chain press tool onto the master link, placing the tool's grooved plate against the master link's inner plate. The tool's second plate, which has two holes for the chain pins to extend out of, should be facing inwards against the master link's outer plate.

    • 8

Tighten the press tool's hollow body bolt to press the master link's plates firmly into place. Loosen the chain press tool and slide it off of the chain. Attach chain pin clips to the exposed pins on the outer plate to secure the master link.

    • 9

Reinstall the front sprocket cover and readjust the rear wheel and chain tension.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not feel that you can complete this task, do not attempt to change your motorcycle's chain. Seek the help of a qualified technician.

  • To avoid damaging the chain breaker and press tools, do not use power tools to provide additional strength.

  • Avoid overtightening the new master link to prevent chain binding that can create a loos of control.
