Sodium is a mineral that is present in many different food items. It is a necessary component of the diet because it helps coordinate muscle movement and neurological functions. Sodium also helps to maintain the proper balance of concentrated fluids within the blood; however, an excess of sodium in the blood is detrimental because it has the potential to lead to such conditions as hypertension, or high blood pressure. Nevertheless, it is important that you consume the proper amount of sodium, rather than an excess of sodium. Even though sodium is found in a variety of products, you can still reduce blood levels of sodium for health by making simple decisions and analyzing the products you choose to purchase.
Things You'll Need
- Fresh foods
Drink more water. One of the most effective ways to make sure that your body is receiving enough fluids is by drinking water. Especially if you happen to consume a meal with an excess of sodium, drinking water is the best way to contend with the high sodium content that is being filtered through the kidneys.
Avoid processed foods. In order to preserve freshness, processed foods contain an abundant amount of sodium. In order to reduce the level of blood sodium for health purposes, choose foods that are not processed. Fresh foods do not contain nearly as much sodium. If you still desire processed foods, look for an item that has a reduced sodium content.
Do not add an abundance of salt to food. By adding extra salt to a recipe, you are not only preventing yourself from tasting the natural flavor of the food, but you are raising the levels of sodium in your body. Sometimes, adding the extra salt is not necessary. Try the food without it and if it needs extra flavor, use a different spice or a citrus blend.
Use condiments and salad dressing sparingly. Salad dressings and condiments tend to possess high levels of sodium; therefore, the more you add to your meal, the more sodium you will consume. In order to achieve the desired flavor, you do not have to dominate the food with the condiment or dressing. Instead, just use a small amount.
