How Do I Get AOL Mail Through Outlook Express?
AOL email users may find it helpful to configure their AOL account in Outlook Express. Configuring an AOL email account in Outlook Express enables AOL users to receive and send mail from Outlook Express without needing to access their web-based accounts. AOL email users must use Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) settings to use an AOL account successfully in Outlook Express. Using Outlook Express with an AOL email account enables the user to maximize on their AOL email quota, as email messages received on the computer do not count.

Adding an AOL Account

Open Outlook Express, click “Accounts,” select “Tools,” click “Add,” and then select “Mail.” A dialog box opens.

Enter your name in the “Display” field, and then select “Next.” Type your full AOL email address in the “Email address” field, and then click “Next.”

Select “IMAP” from the “My incoming mail server is a” list, and then enter “imap.aol.com” in the “Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) server” box.

Enter “smtp.aol.com” in the “Outgoing mail (SMTP) server box” box, click “Next,” and then enter your AOL account name in the “Account name” box.

Type your AOL account password in the “Password” box, and then leave the “Remember password” box unchanged. Select “Next,” and then choose “Finish.”

Go to the Mail tab under “Internet Accounts,” click on the AOL account you added, select “Properties,” and then choose the “Servers” tab.

Select the “My server requires authentication” box, select “Apply,” and then select the “Advanced” tab. Enter “587” in the “Outgoing mail (SMTP)” box, and then select “Apply.”

Click on the “IMAP” tab, deselect the “Store special folders on IMAP server” box, choose “Apply,” and then select “OK.” Select “Apply,” and then choose “OK.”

Finalize the configuration of AOL in Outlook Express by selecting “Close,” and then choosing “Yes” when asked “Would you like to download folders from the mail server you added?” You can now receive AOL mail in Outlook Express.
