How to Make a Pop-Up Volcano Card

Save

Personalized greeting cards make great gifts to friends and relatives. Pop-up cards add an unexpected surprise that impresses the receiver of the card and often prompts a smile. Although not a typical card theme, the concept of volcanoes makes a great gift idea for boys, science teachers and fathers due to the pop-up exploding element. If you need a handmade gift that shows the hard effort you put into creating it, then making a pop-up card may be the right option for you to choose.

Things You'll Need

  • Card stock
  • Scissors
  • Construction paper
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Glue stick
  • Glitter
  • Paint
  • Cut the card stock to the desired size. Typically, greeting cards are six by eight inches. Fold the piece of card stock in half vertically.

  • Draw a volcano on a piece of brown construction paper. A volcano has a shape similar to an upside-down triangle. To make the volcano look realistic, make the base of the volcano larger than the top. Make the volcano half to three-fourths the length of the card and at least three-fourths the width.

  • Use a ruler to measure two inches on each side of the volcano. Draw a one-inch vertical line on each side of the widest part of the volcano. Make the lines adjacent from each other and then connect the sides of the lines to form two small rectangles on each side of the volcano

  • Draw lava on a sheet of orange or red construction paper. Make the lava in the shape of a giant teardrop or make a large uniformed shape that resembles a blob.

  • Cut out the volcano and lava. Glue the lava onto the volcano with a glue stick. When you cut out the volcano, make sure that you cut out the two rectangles attached to it because these are the tabs to make the volcano pop up when the card opens.

  • Fold the volcano vertically in half with both the blank sides together. The vertical crease will face toward you when folded correctly. Make sure that the crease is sharp, and then fold the tabs underneath by half of an inch.

  • Place the volcano over the crease on the card. Line up the crease of the card with the crease of the volcano.

  • Glue the folded down tabs in place. Allow the glue to dry before you close the greeting card.

  • Decorate the inside and outside of the volcano card. Add a personalized message inside, glue glitter onto the lava to make it stand out or paint additional lava inside the card.
