If you have a computer that is several years old, it may have USB 1.0 ports and not USB 2.0. Although the ports look identical, the USB 1.0 ports lag in comparison when it comes to data transfer speed. Some newer external hard drives and other hardware won't even function on the older USB ports. Because of this, you should update your older USB 1.0 ports to USB 2.0.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • USB 2.0 internal port card
  • Driver installation CD

Instructions

    • 1

Power down the computer and remove all of the cables connected to the back of the drive. Unscrew the Phillips screws around the backside of the computer. Once the screws are free, you can slide the case off the computer, exposing the interior.

    • 2

Find the USB ports on the exterior of the computer, then look inside the computer to find the actual USB card. The USB card connects to the large computer board, also known as the motherboard.

    • 3

Remove the current USB card from the motherboard and slide in the new USB 2.0 card. Once it's in place, close up the computer, reattach the case and screws, then plug the cables back into the computer and turn it on.

    • 4

Insert the driver installation CD into the computer and wait for the driver installation wizard to launch. Follow the brief set of prompts provided by the wizard, and the driver installs onto the computer. You can now begin using the USB 2.0 ports.
