A backup camera is a good investment for your RV. It helps you when you're backing up and will also show you what kind of traffic is behind you when driving. Many types of RV backup cameras are available -- some with side cameras, a color screen, microphone and different-sized monitors. Installing a backup camera on your RV is easy enough for a Saturday do-it-yourself project.
- Difficulty:
- Moderate
Instructions
- Drill
- 3/4" drill bit
- Screwdrivers
- Small adjustable wrench
- Wire ties
- Sealant
-
-
1
Attach the camera bracket to the upper portion of the RV using the drill. Make sure where you mount it is sturdy enough to hold the camera and the bracket. The best location is above the license plate.
-
2
Attach the bracket using the screws provided with your camera.
-
3
Adjust the angle, using the rear bumper and the back of vehicle as a reference point.
-
4
Mount the wind deflector to prevent the buildup of dust, dirt and moisture on the camera lens.
-
5
Attach the monitor bracket, using a compression plate. Attach to the dash or any convenient place to mount the monitor. You want to be able to see it when in use, but you don't want a distraction while driving.
-
6
Adjust the angle of the monitor to allow the driver to see the screen easily from his seat.
-
7
Install the cable without any kinks. Keep it away from hot or rotating parts. Fasten the cable securely.
-
8
Install the system to an ignition-switched power source. Insert the extension cable into camera.
-
9
Connect the red wire marked ACC is to the ignition power source. Connect the black (ground) cord to the chassis ground. Connect the blue cord to the backup circuit.
