How to Dye Gray Hair Platinum

In this day and age, with diet, exercise and careful appearance maintenance, you can stave off the signs of aging well beyond what was thought to be possible in the past. One thing that may give your true age away, however, is the graying of your hair. Platinum blond colors and golden honey tones are the most effective color choices for gray hair. These lighter colors dye gray hair more evenly and provide a more natural look with less contrast when roots begin to grow than darker colored dyes. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Applicator bottle
  • Permanent platinum blonde dye
  • 30 volume developer

Instructions

    • 1

      Put on the gloves.

    • 2

Mix the blonde dye and the 30 volume developer in the applicator bottle, as per the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 3

Part your hair into four sections with a comb and secure each section with a clip.

    • 4

Remove the clip from one of the sections. Apply the dye beginning at the scalp and moving out to the tips of the hair. Thoroughly saturate dye in visibly gray areas. When the section is fully saturated, re-clip it. Repeat the process until each section is coated with dye.

    • 5

Set the timer for the maximum time specified in the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 6

Rinse your hair with lukewarm water until the water runs clear, when the timer indicates that the dye has been on your hair for the correct amount of time.

    • 7

Wash and condition your hair with color-safe shampoo and conditioner, and dry and style as usual.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose a permanent blonde hair dye that is specially formulated for gray hair coverage.

  • Because gray hair cuticles tend to be more resistant to dyes, it is recommended that you leave the hair color on for the maximum time limit set by the manufacturer.

  • Avoid leaving the dye on your hair longer than the maximum amount of time recommended, as this can cause your hair to become over-processed.
