How to Make a Replica Super Bowl Trophy

A month or so after we celebrate the new year, we have an American celebration of athletic ability. The Super Bowl crowns the best professional football team with the Vince Lombardi Trophy. The 22-inch stainless steel "Holy Grail of Football," as USA Today puts it, weighs 7 pounds. Your next Super Bowl party can include your very own Lombardi replica. You can use any material you prefer, but these steps cover the process for creating a papier-mache version of the Super Bowl trophy.

Things You'll Need

  • Regulation size football
  • Plastic wrap
  • Paper strips from newspapers or magazines
  • Large sponge brushes
  • PVA craft glue
  • Scissors
  • 3 angled wooden boards 15 inches tall and 4 inches wide
  • Nail gun or hammer
  • Nails
  • Silver spray paint
  • Black paint
  • Small paintbrush

Papier-Mache Ball

  • Wrap the football in plastic wrap. This protects the ball while you are making the papier-mache.

  • Cover half the football in several layers of strips. Apply a generous layer of PVA craft glue to each layer with a sponge brush. Allow the strips to dry.

  • Remove the papier mache cast from the football. The cast should slide off the plastic wrap, but if it doesn't, use scissors to cut it off, and then rewrap the football in plastic.

  • Cover the second half of the football with strips of paper. Apply PVA glue to each layer with a sponge brush. Allow the cast to dry.

  • Remove the new cast from the football and plastic.

  • Put the two cast halves together with a thin layer of strips and PVA glue, and allow the cast to dry.

Making the Base

  • Place the wooden boards together to form a tripod.

  • Nail the boards together with a nail gun or hammer.

  • Place the papier-mache ball in the triangular hole at the top of the tripod, and tilt the ball at an angle similar to the ball on the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

  • Affix the ball to the base with paper strips and PVA glue, and let the materials dry.

  • Coat the trophy with silver spray paint. Then use the black paint and paintbrush to add laces, the National Football League logo and any other personal details.

Tips & Warnings

  • Spray paint the trophy outside or in a well-ventilated room, because the fumes can be toxic in an enclosed space.
