How to Create Image Maps with Microsoft Publisher
An image map is an image on a website that contains multiple hyperlinks (also called hotspots). If you are just starting out with web design and you want to test out your simple design using a program you’re familiar with, it’s easy to create an image map using Microsoft Publisher. While the design is quite simple, if you need to get a page up in a hurry, this will save you time over more complicated HTML creation programs.

Creating Your Image Map
-
1
Open Microsoft Publisher and either open the web page you’ve been working with or click on "File" then "New" to open the template menu. If using a pre-existing web page, skip to step 3.
-
2
Scroll down the list of publication types to "Web Sites." Look through the templates and decide upon the one you would like to use. You can use the Easy Web Site Builder and customize your site more or skip that step and use it later.
-
-
3
Insert the picture you would like to make an image map on your document by clicking the "Insert" menu, scrolling down to "Picture" and then clicking on "From File." Find your file in the Explorer window and double-click on it.
-
4
Place the image where you want it on your document and resize it to your desire.
-
5
Scroll over to the Hot Spot tool on the left, which looks like a globe with a dotted line box around it. Click on the icon to bring up the tool.
-
6
Use the crosshairs to drag the tool around the part of the image you would like to associate with a particular hyperlink. When you release, a menu will come up that lets you select the hyperlink from your computer or to type in.
-
7
Repeat steps 5 and 6 to associate other parts of the image with other hyperlinks.
-
8
When you are finished, you will have an image map created in Microsoft Publisher.

Tips & Warnings
If you have Microsoft Publisher 2000 or earlier, you will not be able to complete the above steps without an upgrade. If that is the case, use a more dedicated web creator such as Microsoft Front Page.
