How to Make a String Choker Using Square Beads

A choker is a 14- to 16-inch necklace, usually single strand, that lies at the bottom of the neck. Chokers are one of the most versatile necklace styles around as they complement everything but turtlenecks and other high-collared tops. Beading your own choker is a great way to save money and express your personal style. A strung square bead choker is an easy project for the beginning jewelry maker.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out your bead design on your bead board. Square beads will pop when paired with small round beads in a complementary color. If your square beads are dark, try a light color for your round beads. Take your time setting out a design you are happy with.

    • 2

Cut a length of bead cord about 4 inches longer than you want your finished choker. Tie a knot as close to the end of the cord as possible. String one bead tip onto the cord so the knot is inside the cups and the hook is facing away from the length of cord. Apply a dab of glue to the knot and close the bead tip with your flat nose pliers. Trim any excess cord.

    • 3

Attach one side of your clasp to the hook. Grasp the tip of the hook with your round nose pliers and gently pull it around to close the loop.

    • 4

String your beads as laid out on your bead board, beginning with a round bead. Use a beading needle for beads with smaller holes. You should have a length of beads about 1 inch shorter than you want your overall choker. End with a round bead.

    • 5

String your second bead tip and repeat step 2. Use knotting tweezers if you are having trouble getting the knot to tighten close to your last bead.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try using two different accent beads instead of one.

  • Choose your bead colors from the colors of the outfits you wear regularly.

  • Small beads and jewelry parts are a choking hazard for young children.
