1
Measure the largest part of your head with a cloth tape measure. Stand in front of a mirror, place the tape measure approximately 1 inch above your eyebrows and right above the top of your ears and wrap the tape measure all the way around your head.
-
2
Write down the number of inches that you obtained from the measurement of your head. Convert the inches to centimeters by multiplying the number of inches by 2.54 or by using the "Conversion Tool" link in the "Resources" section of this article. Some manufacturers may size their helmets in centimeters instead of inches.
-
3
Visit a retailer of motorcycle helmets and choose the style of helmet you are interested in purchasing. The Motorcycle Safety Association recommends a full-face helmet for maximum safety.
-
4
Try on the helmet. Hold the helmet by the chin straps with the bottom facing upward toward you. Place your thumbs on the inside of the chin straps and use your fingertips, on both hands, to balance the sides of the helmet. Place the helmet on your head and fasten the chin straps.
-
5
Assess the helmet's fit. Place one hand on each side of the helmet and move it up and down. If your skin moves with the movement of the helmet and you feel light, even pressure all over your head, it's likely a good fit. Keep the chin straps fastened, hold your head upright and try to pull the helmet off of your head. If it comes off, it's too large.
-
6
Remove the helmet and evaluate whether your head feels sore in any spots. Look in a mirror to see if there are any red places on your forehead or temples where the helmet may have exerted too much pressure. If you experience any soreness or redness, try a larger size or different brand of helmet.

Look for a Department of Transportation (DOT) sticker or a Snell Memorial Foundation sticker on the inside or outside of any helmet you consider buying to ensure that it meets minimum safety standards.
