How to Configure uTorrent for Speed

Programs such as uTorrent allow Internet users to share files across a network without the aid of a centralized server. Users are able to download files from the computer of anyone else who is also connected to the same network, essentially allowing everyone to act as his own central server. Many users download movies and software files that are typically larger files and can easily be in excess of 1 GB, so configuring uTorrent for a speedier download is a necessity.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open the uTorrent client.

    • 2

Click on "Options," and then "Preferences." In the Preferences menu, click "Connections."

    • 3

Change the "Port used for incoming connections" field to any number between 1000 to 4000 (it does not matter which number). Confirm this setting by clicking "Apply," and then "OK."

    • 4

Go back to the "Options" menu and select the "Speed Guide."

    • 5

Click the "Run speed test at www.dslreports.com" button. This will test and give you your connection speed, which you will need to enter. Select the "Flash 8 plugin based speed test" if you have a DSL or cable modem; if you have a phone line connection select the "Simple Mobile Speed Test" when redirected to the DSLReports webpage. (You can also test other connection types such as iPhone; just read from the list on DSLReports to find the correct test for your connection.)

    • 6

Click on the city of your choice in the server list to start the test. This will take a few seconds to return the results. The speed test will return your download speed, upload speed and latency.

    • 7

Select "Connection Type" in your uTorrent Speed Guide window, and select the connection type from the list that is the closest number to the download speed from the speed test.

    • 8

Click on "Test if port is properly forwarded" in the same Speed Guide window. This result will open up in your Internet browser. The results should say "OK" and that your port is accepting connections. Then hit "Use Selected Settings." You are now finished configuring uTorrent for speed.

If your result was not OK and you are unable to accept connections, that means you are using a router or hub and your port is not forwarded. In this case go to the next step.

    • 9

Go to PortForward (link listed in Resources). Scroll to the end of the homepage and find the model name and number for the router or hub you are using in the list provided, and then click on it. It will forward you to step-by-step instructions to configure your specific router or hub for uTorrent. When you are done, repeat Step 8 and make sure you are able to receive connections.
