You may be nervous and excited at the same time when you finally receive a job interview, especially if you have concerns about your previous job and references. You might have left on bad terms, been terminated or laid off or even left without notice. With careful preparation, you can answer these questions with ease and finesse.

Review your resume for red flags. Look at your employment history and see whether there are any obvious questions that the potential employer may ask about. Contemplate how you'll answer these questions.

Stay calm. If the interviewer asks a question that makes you uncomfortable, he will notice and believe you have something to hide. Maintain your breathing pattern, take a moment to consider the question and be as calm as possible when you reply.

Be as honest as possible with your references. If you were terminated or resigned, explain the situation as positively as possible. Do not bad-mouth, be defensive or play the victim.

Monitor your voice to ensure it is calm and not defensive. If you had a negative experience with a previous employer, the anger, disappointment and/or hurt may still come out in your voice. Talk about your previous jobs to another person; ask him if he hears any anger or change in your voice.
