How to Maintain Rubber Floor Mats

Place your rubber floor mats on a flat surface outside.

Remove any dirt and debris with a garden hose or power washer. Turn the mat over, and rinse off the bottom as well.

Clean both sides of the mat with water, a household detergent and a scrub brush. Rinse off the mat with clear water. Shake the water off the mat, and allow it to dry.

Look to see if there are any stains or unwanted stubborn materials remaining on the mat. A common stain on car floor mats is from tar. Remove tar by covering it with an ample dose of linseed oil. Let the oil soak in for 15 minutes. Blot it out with a damp cloth, and rinse off the mat. Shake the water off the mat, and allow it to dry.

Protect your mat by spraying it with a commercial rubber protecting product, available at some auto supply stores and hardware stores.

Work the protecting product into the rubber with clean cloths. Wipe the mat off to get a nice shine.
