How to Make a Tenon With a Router

A tenon is a projection from the end of a board that is inserted into a mortise to form a joint. Custom woodworked furniture has many tenon and mortised joints. It is possible to make tenons with a router if you carefully prepare a jig platform. A platform jig makes cutting tenons quick and easy.

Things You'll Need

• Board
• Jig platform
• Router
• Clamps
• Vise
• Work bench

Instructions

1. Clamp the tenon board vertically to your vise.

2. Clamp the jig securely around the workpiece ensuring that the clamps will not interfere with the movement of your router.

3. Adjust the height of your jig platform to set the depth of your cut.

4. Route the outside perimeter of the board and insert the tenon into the mortise to ensure that it fits.
