How to Become a Car Stereo Installer
The best car stereo installers are professionally trained, and MECP (Mobile Electronics Certification Program) certified. There are car stereo installation schools around the country, but a simple MECP certification, and some on the job experience is usually all you need to get high-paying work.

1
Research car stereo installation schools. Although these aren't necessary, some people tend to learn more effectively in a classroom environment. There are schools all over the country, and simple search should net you a few results near you. These classes range from six week courses, to weekend workshops.
-
2
Get the training you require. Some places will train you on the job, but if you have an MECP certification, you'll go further, and be paid higher wages than your colleagues in most instances.
-
-
3
Get the MECP study guide, and start studying. When you are ready, you can register to take the test through a local library, or secondary testing facility.
-
4
Start buying tools. You'll need a basic tool set, including: a drill, screwdrivers, multi-meter, wire strippers, pliers, drill bits, screwdriver bits, a work light, and plenty of electrical tape. These tools will get you started, but you'll always need more. This is an ongoing part of the job, and you'll have to keep adding to your collection as you can afford it. The best installers have tens of thousands of dollars invested in their tools.
-
5
Go job hunting. Once you're confident that you have the required tools, and an intermediate understanding of car stereo install techniques, it's time to find a job. Hit the pavement and get your application into as many shops as you can. Try to bypass the front counter people, and get your application directly into the hands of the install manager.
-
6
Work hard, add to your tool collection, and expand your knowledge level to include other things, such as: mobile video, alarms, remote car starts, and custom enclosure design.

Tips & Warnings
Continue your education for the highest earnings. After you pass the MECP Basic Installation exam, there are other levels to advance to, including: advanced installation, master installation, and the mobile product specialist exam. There are fewer than one hundred master level installers in the world at any given time. Those that reach this level get rewarded with the best jobs, and the highest pay.
