How to Obtain U.S. Military Medals

The United States Military has awarded medals for acts of courage, valor and participation in major war campaigns throughout its history. Every medal awarded has a personal, unit or campaign story behind the medal. As a result, U.S. military medals have become popular collector's items for both those who have served and those who have not. If you are a collector, a common task that arises is obtaining new or used U.S. military medals.

Instructions

    • 1

Read your local newspaper, and look for any estate sales, household auctions or large yard sales in your area. Many times these sales will have old military medals in the collection of items available to purchase.

    • 2

Make a list of all the sales and auctions going on in your area and the dates that they start. If there are several starting at the same time, write down the largest one.

    • 3

Arrive at the sale as soon as it opens, but do not begin looking around. Instead, ask the person in charge of the auction or sale directly if they have any U.S. military medals for sale. If they do, you can verify the type and age and determine if they meet your criteria for purchase.

    • 4

Navigate to the eBay website, and select the "All Categories" box to see a list of categories. Then select the "Collectibles" category.

    • 5

Type the phrase "U.S. military medals" in the empty search box, and click the "Search" button. You will see a list of medals that you can bid on and purchase if they meet your purchase criteria. In order to purchase, you will need to log in to your eBay account to place a bid.

    • 6

Visit your local Army/Navy Store to check for used or new surplus medals that are for sale. New surplus medals at these stores will be in the best condition but will not have been previously awarded to an active-duty serviceman or woman.
