Instructions

    • 1

Empty the washing machine and start it to the longest cycle. Use cold water and extra rinse if it is available.

    • 2

Pour in twice the amount of bleach recommended for the washer into the detergent port. The recommend amount is often located on the top of the detergent port at the top of the washer. For most washers, this will be about 2 cups. There should be water flowing in the detergent port that will wash the bleach directly into the washer.

    • 3

After the wash cycle is complete, run another cold water wash using vinegar instead of bleach. This will neutralize the bleach and help remove any residual smell.

    • 4

After the vinegar cycle is complete, run the washer one last time using baking soda in place of detergent. This will neutralize the vinegar and bleach, preventing damage to your clothes.

Tips & Warnings

  • To prevent the musty smell from coming back, leave the washer door open to allow any residual water in the washer to evaporate instead of offering a place for mold and mildew to grow. Note that an open washer can create a safety hazard for small children, so you will need to weight the benefits versus the risk.
