How to Tether a New 3G iPhone
Until recently, it was necessary for an iPhone user to jailbreak his phone in order to tether it to a computer so that it could be used as a modem. This has now changed and the iPhone has built in tethering capabilities. Any user can now connect her iPhone to a laptop and surf the Web using the iPhone's data capabilities.

1
Contact your wireless provider and purchase a plan that includes tethering. Tethering is using your iPhone as a modem to connect a computer to the Internet. You can also allow a third-party application to configure your phone for tethering, however, it is not licensed by the official iPhone wireless carrier.

2
Turn on your iPhone and tap on the "Settings" icon. Tap on "General" and then "Network." If you have a tethering plan, you will need to slide the "Tethering" option to the "On" position.
