Until recently, it was necessary for an iPhone user to jailbreak his phone in order to tether it to a computer so that it could be used as a modem. This has now changed and the iPhone has built in tethering capabilities. Any user can now connect her iPhone to a laptop and surf the Web using the iPhone's data capabilities.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your wireless provider and purchase a plan that includes tethering. Tethering is using your iPhone as a modem to connect a computer to the Internet. You can also allow a third-party application to configure your phone for tethering, however, it is not licensed by the official iPhone wireless carrier.

    • 2

Turn on your iPhone and tap on the "Settings" icon. Tap on "General" and then "Network." If you have a tethering plan, you will need to slide the "Tethering" option to the "On" position.

    • 3

Connect your iPhone to your computer. Again, go to "Settings" followed by "General." Tap on "Bluetooth" and slide this option to "On." Follow your computer's instruction manual for creating a Bluetooth connection and connect to your phone.

    • 4

Browse to your computer's "Network Service Settings." From here, you will need to select "iPhone." Use this to connect to the Internet. When a connection is successful, you will see a blue band at the top of your phone.

    • 5

Surf the Internet as if you were connected via wired connection.

Tips & Warnings

  • Going around your wireless provider to use tethering may result in extra fees or suspended service.

  • Your wireless provider can tell if you are using your iPhone as a modem.
