How to Load a Thule Bicycle Rack

Thule produces a wide variety of bicycle racks. In fact, they have a solution for every situation. Thule trunk racks are the common choice for most sedans. SUVs and other trucks that cannot accommodate a trunk rack often use one of Thule's hitch racks. Roof racks are another option in lieu of trunk and hitch racks. Thule also makes spare tire racks--primarily for Jeeps--as well as bicycle carriers that work in the bed of a pickup truck. There are two primary ways of loading bikes onto a Thule bicycle rack.

Instructions

  1. Tray Style

    • 1

Lift your bicycle onto the trays that line up with its front and rear wheels.

    • 2

Pull the arm up to secure your bicycle. On some models, such as the Thule T2 hitch rack, the arm is locked in place over your front wheel. On other models, including the Thule Doubletrack, the arm is situated over the top tube of your bicycle frame.

    • 3

Secure the rear wheel using the adjustable ratchet strap included on the T2 and the Doubletrack. Repeat this process for additional bicycles.

    Cradle Style

    • 4

Position the top tube of your bicycle frame over the top of the cradles designed to accommodate it on the arms that stick out from the back of your vehicle.

    • 5

Rest your bicycle on the cradle.

    • 6

Adjust the cradle straps so that they are tight around the frame of your bicycle. Repeat this process for additional bikes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most Thule roof racks use an arm to secure your bicycle, similarly to the T2. Others use straps over the wheels, while some require removal of the front wheel so that your bicycle's fork can be secured to the rack. Most Thule roof racks utilize some combination of these locking features. Check with your Thule dealer for specifics and advice on the best solution for your needs.

  • If your bicycle has a "step-through" top tube, as is the case on many beach cruisers and many ladies-style bicycles, you will need to purchase a frame adaptor that extends from your seat post to just below your handlebars. This piece simulates an even top tube and allows for your bike to work with Thule racks using the cradle system.
