How to Remove Lancets

Lancets are tiny needles coated in plastic that are used in the medical industry to draw blood. They are most frequently used by individuals with diabetes to test their blood sugar levels. Although lancets can be used alone, they are more commonly inserted into a lancing device, which makes pricking the skin easier and less painful, according to the Accu-Chek website. Once the skin has been pricked, the lancet must be removed from the device and discarded.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the lancing device in one hand and remove the protective cap with the other hand by pulling it outward, away from the device. If you have just used the device, then the cap is already off and does not need to be removed.

    • 2

Locate the ejector button on the lancing device. In most devices, this is a clearly marked button located on the front or side of the device.

    • 3

Press or slide the ejector button with your finger, per the manufacturer's instructions. You will hear a click, and the lancet will eject slightly from the bottom of the lancing unit.

    • 4

Grasp the lancet carefully between your fingers, and pull it free from the lancing device.

Tips & Warnings

  • All lancing devices are slightly different, so refer to the manufacturer's instructions for the type of device that you own.

  • Always place used lancets in sealed, punctureproof containers to prevent individuals from being stuck while handling trash bags.
