How to Use Henna Extract After Relaxing Hair

Many women use henna as a hair dye because it does not damage or dry out your hair like chemical dyes can. Henna is made by powdering the dried, green leaves of the henna plant. Traditionally, it is used to make temporary designs on an Indian bride’s skin just before the ceremony. Other people use it for temporary tattoos.
Those that use henna for hair dye claim it makes your hair glossy and soft, in addition to giving it a beautiful red color. You should always use body-art-quality henna dye, since it is long-lasting and free of additives. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wait at least two weeks before hennaing your hair after using relaxers. This gives your hair time to regain its natural oils and conditioners before you treat it again. Treating your hair right after relaxing it might cause it to become brittle and very dry.

    • 2

Mix about 1/2 cup of henna powder with enough lemon juice to make a thick paste. Add about a teaspoon of olive oil to the mix. The olive oil will condition your hair as you apply the henna and prevent dryness. Allow the henna mixture to sit overnight to release the dyes.

    • 3

Put on some plastic gloves to avoid dyeing your skin and scoop up a glob of henna in your fingers. Smear it onto your hair, starting with the roots at the nape of your neck and working forward to your hairline. Smear it on thickly, like cake frosting.

    • 4

Wrap your coated hair in plastic wrap and a towel and leave the dye on for three to five hours. Overnight is best if you are willing to sleep with your hair wrapped.

    • 5

Remove the plastic wrap and comb out as much of the dried henna as you can. Wash away the rest in the shower; do not shampoo your hair. Rinse your hair thoroughly and apply a thick, deep conditioner.
