How to Fund Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Several organizations perform embryonic stem cell research in the United States and allow private donors to commit funds to the cause. Among these are the Bedford Stem Cell Research Foundation, the Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute. You can fund embryonic stem cell research by donating to any of these programs.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The Bedford Stem Cell Research Foundation's website claims the foundation funnels 94 percent of all donations directly into research. The foundation uses pluripotent stem cells (from embryos that are fertilized in a laboratory) to perform research on several currently incurable diseases. You can donate to Bedford directly by going to Bedfordresearch.org.

  2. Step 2

The Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center is run out of the University of California, Irvine. The center, however, is financed using a combination of public and private funds and researches treatments for conditions such as spinal cord injuries. The center also accepts donations on its website, Stemcell.uci.edu/index.cfm.

  3. Step 3

The Harvard Stem Cell Institute is administrated by Harvard University and is funded in part by federal grants and the university itself, although most of its funding comes from individual contributions. According to the institute's website, more than 90 percent of all donations go directly to funding research, with the organization reserving only a small amount for administrative costs. The institute, whose efforts focus on treatments for diseases such as diabetes and cancer, also accept donations at its website, Hsci.harvard.edu.

Tips & Warnings
  • To get the most from your donation, give to organizations dedicated to medical research rather than simply advocacy.
