Even though epoxy is stain-resistant, you may occasionally notice marks on your epoxy garage floor. Because epoxy is a nonporous material, substances that come into contact with your garage floor will not be able to seep through and leave permanent stains. This does not mean, however, that you will not notice marks on your epoxy garage floor from time to time. Fortunately, epoxy stands up well to regular wear and tear and, with regular cleaning, your floors can look new for many years. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any cardboard boxes or mechanical items that are sitting directly on the garage floor. Water will spread quickly along a flat surface and can damage electrical equipment and cardboard.

    • 2

Sweep the garage well to remove all dirt and debris. Dirt is abrasive and can scratch epoxy. You must remove it before cleaning to ensure that you do not accidentally scratch your epoxy while cleaning off the marks.

    • 3

Mix equal parts ammonia and water and mop your epoxy floor with the mixture, scrubbing marked areas especially well.

    • 4

Select a standard household degreaser to clean your epoxy floor if the ammonia mixture does not clean away the marks. Marks on your garage floor are likely caused by a grease-based substance. Degreasers are effective against these materials without being abrasive to the epoxy.

    • 5

Apply the degreaser directly to the marks and scrub it gently with a soft-bristled scrub brush, working the degreaser into the marks.

    • 6

Use a dry cloth or eraser pad to vigorously wipe away the degreaser. This should remove any remaining marks.

    • 7

Rinse the area well with water. If you do not rinse away all traces of the cleaning chemicals, they can leave a film on your epoxy garage floor.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sweep your epoxy garage floor and mop it regularly with the ammonia and water solution to prevent dirt from building up on the floor and possibly scratching it.

  • Do not use a wire-bristle brush to scrub your epoxy floor. This can scratch the surface coating.

  • Epoxy is very slippery when wet. Take care that you do not slip and fall while cleaning.
