How to Convert a Dresser
As we learn more about preserving our planet's precious resources, many people are searching for original ways to live as green a lifestyle as possible. We all know about recycling, using green cleaning products and saving energy and water. But quite a few soon-to-be parents may not realize that you can build an eco-friendly nursery. Save some trees and, rather than purchasing a new wooden changing table, covert an old dresser into a piece of sentimental furniture for your little one's room.
Things You'll Need
- Dresser that is longer than it is tall
- Painting or refinishing supplies
- No-skid shelf lining paper
- Scissors
- Contoured changing pad with a double belt
- Staple gun with staples
Instructions

1
Paint or refinish the dresser the color of your choice, and allow it to dry completely.
-
2
Remove the top drawer from the dresser, and set it aside.
-
-
3
Use scissors to cut a piece of no-skid lining paper the size of the top of the dresser. Lay the liner in place.
-
4
Lay the shorter belt, the one meant to secure the baby, on top of the liner. It should be parallel to the shorter sides of the dresser. Adjust it until it is in the approximate center of the top of the dresser. Center the contoured changing pad on top of the belt.
-
5
Lay the longer belt, the one meant to secure the pad to a changing table, over the pad. Place it as closely to the center as possible while leaving room to secure the shorter belt when the baby is lying on the pad. Adjust the belt until the ends are fairly even.
-
6
Use the staple gun to secure the end of the belt hanging over the back of the dresser to the backing, near the top. Fold the end of the belt hanging in the front into the cavity where the top drawer fits. Press the belt to the underside of the top of the dresser, and staple it there.
-
7
Slide the top drawer back into place. Store all of your changing supplies and diapers in the dresser drawers. Your dresser is now a changing table. Remove the staples as your child grows to use the dresser in his room. The staple holes will not show.
