How to Create a Security Key With a Flash Drive
A security key is an encrypted region protected by a password. This is a measure used to protect data or documents from unauthorized access. The portability of a flash, or pen drive, makes is a handy feature. You can store and work on a document in any computer but keep access to that data limited to anyone who has the password. Save and safeguard insurance and banking information, create a safe listing of passwords, the uses are endless. To accomplish this, you need encryption software capable of working on a flash drive. For Windows systems, you need to download software to create a security key but with a Mac system, the software is included in the operating system.

Windows Operating System

Download and install Rohos Mini Drive. Rohos Mini Drive is free application that creates a security key partition for flash drives.

Insert your flash drive into a USB port on your computer.

Open the Rohos Mini Drive application.

Select “Setup USB Key” from the start page of the application.

Let the program detect the USB device.

Set the options by clicking on the “Change” link. The only setting you need to be concern ed with is the disk size. Rohos is creating a partition on your drive. If you wish to make the partition larger, you can change the setting here. The partition will be the secure area of your drive. Rohos is limited to two GB.

Click “Ok” to save any settings you may have changed.

Enter your password for the flash drive then enter again under “Confirm password.”

Click on the “Create disk” button at the bottom of the dialog box.
Mac Operating System

Open the Disk Utility application that comes with your Mac operating system.

Press the “New Image” icon at the top of the toolbar.

Fill in the parameters for your disk image. Select size of file and a location for your new, encrypted file.

Enter a name for your file in the first text box.

Click the “Create” button at the bottom of the screen.

Enter a password for the file when prompted. Let the program create the file for you.

Locate the file on your hard drive and double-click on it.

Enter the password.

Enter any personal data you want the file to contain.

Insert a USB flash drive into the USB port.

Copy or move the file to the flash drive.
