How to Sharpen a Mortise Bit
A mortise is a hole cut into a board that is used to accommodate a tenon. A tenon is a projection from the end of a board that is inserted into a mortise to form a joint. Mortise bits are used to make mortise holes. They must be maintained like all of the other tools that a carpenter uses. If a bit becomes a little dull you can hone it, but if it becomes very dull, sharpen it.

Insert your bit into the appropriate slot of your filing block and then clamp the block securely to the inside jaws of your vise.

Clean the bit with a dry rag.

File the sharp cutting surface of the bit. Begin with the inside edge. Softly follow the inside edge around with your file. Ensure that you count the number of file strokes and use the same number on all grooves in the cutting edge.

File the bottom bevel of the bit in a similar fashion. Pay attention to the angle of the bit and follow it with your file repeatedly until it becomes sharp. File the opposite side to remove any burrs that the filing has created.

Wipe the surface clean with a damp rag.
