How to Repair a Faulty Keyboard

Sometimes a faulty computer keyboard merely needs cleaning, rather than complex repairs, in order to restore functionality. Cleaning a keyboard of debris and spills can be accomplished in a short time using a series of easy steps, which can be accomplished using materials you may already have around the house. The cost of repairing and maintaining a computer keyboard, outside of routine cleaning and dusting, often are more expensive and time-consuming than simply purchasing another keyboard, making cleaning the faulty keyboard your best option.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a can of compressed air to blow dust and debris from the spaces between the keys of the keyboard. Hold the keyboard at an angle so that the dust flows out of the keys and onto the desk, floor or another surface so that it can be vacuumed later.

    • 2

Carefully examine the layout of the keyboard and make sure you remember the location of each key. Pop each key off gently by using the blade end of a straight-edged screwdriver. Place the keys in a plastic tub of clean water for half an hour to cleanse the underside of the keys of dirt and debris.

    • 3

Lightly move a moistened cotton swab across the surface of the keyboard to remove any spotty stains and dirt from the keyboard.

    • 4

Replace the keys on the keyboard. Plug the keyboard back into the PS2 or USB port on the computer.

    • 5

If the wire on the keyboard is visibly frayed or the wireless keyboard is unresponsive, you will need to throw the keyboard out and purchase a new one.
