- Face cleanser or oil-absorbing sheets
- Eye shadow base or primer
- Eyeshadow
- Eyeshadow brush

Prep your eyelids. Your eyelids are prone to producing small amounts of oil, so it's important to start with a clean slate. Before applying makeup, wash your face with your cleanser of choice--taking extra care around the sensitive eye area. Pat dry. You can also gently dab oil-absorbing sheets on your eyelids to soak up any excess oil.

Apply an eyeshadow base or primer. Most major makeup lines--including Benefit, Neutrogena and Smashbox--offer products like these. Bases and primers are specially formulated to act as a barrier against oil, and they provide a smooth, dry surface to which eye makeup adheres.

Apply your eyeshadow using a quality brush or applicator. Generally, the denser and shorter the bristles are, the more color the brush is able to pack in and transfer directly to your eyelid. Remember to clean your brush often. Bristles collect dirt and oil over time, which can affect eye shadow application and overall wear.

Matte foundation, followed by a dusting of powder, works well as a substitute for eye shadow base or primer.
Powder shadows often last much longer than cream shadows. But if you must use cream, layer a bit of powder shadow on top of it to minimize the appearance of creasing.
