How to Build Backyard Pull-up Bars
Pull-ups are one of the best exercises for toning your upper body and torso area. When beginning this exercise, many people find it difficult, if not impossible, to do more than two or three pull-ups. If you make your own pull-up bar, you’ll be able to practice doing pull-ups whenever you want. You’ll quickly see your endurance and the number of pull-ups increase drastically. After only three weeks of pull-ups, three times a week, you should see your pull-up numbers double.
Things You'll Need
- Shovel
- Gravel
- Cement
- 3-inch steel pipes, 7 feet long
- 1 steel pipe, 3 1/4 feet long
- U connectors
- Spade
- Bricks
- Stones
Instructions
-
-
1
Hollow out two holes that are approximately 3 1/4 feet apart. Each hole should be 1 ¼ feet across and 2 ½ feet in depth.
-
2
Attach the U connectors at ends of the 7-foot pipes. These are going to be the support sides for the pull-up bar. The ends of the pipe are threaded, so the U connector screws right on. U connectors are special pipe end pieces that can be bought at any hardware store.
-
-
3
Connect a 3 ¼ foot pipe in between the support poles by screwing it into the U connectors.
-
4
Stir 4 pounds of pre-mix concrete with 1 ½ gallons of water in a wheelbarrow or plastic tub using a spade or shovel.
-
5
Place a 3-inch high layer of gravel in the holes you dug and pour in the concrete. Don't fill the concrete higher than the edge of the holes.
-
6
Place the two support poles of the pull-up bar in the two holes. Center the poles in the holes, if possible.
-
7
Place stones around the bottom of the support pipes to keep them straight while the concrete dries.

Tips & Warnings
If there's wind or rain in the forecast for the days when you're going to pour the concrete, then cover the holes with plywood.
Avoid doing pull-ups if you have back problems.
