How to Become a BlueCross BlueShield Provider
BlueCross BlueShield is one of the most ubiquitous health insurance providers, so if you are a provider for BCBS, you'll be able to increase your clientele. The process to become a BlueCross BlueShield provider should take around 30 to 45 days, assuming that you submit your application and all of the requested supporting documents. Applications vary by location, so be sure to follow all instructions from your local BlueCross BlueShield office.

1
Contact your local BlueCross BlueShield office. If you are not sure which one this is, you can enter your zip code into the Blue Finder and you will automatically be transferred to the local website.
-
2
Ask for an application. Based on the type of service you provide, you will have a certain application to fill out. For example, the application for family practitioners is different than the one for a massage therapist. Some local BCBS sites allow you to download the application from their website.

Submit your application along with supporting documents. Fill out your application as accurately as possible--mistakes or omissions can lead to a delay. Supporting documents may include a copy of your license and a letter of recommendation from a hospital at which you worked, but these vary based on the type of provider you are and the location that you are applying for.
-
4
Schedule an office visit. In many cases, BlueCross BlueShield will want to do an office inspection. If your office is undergoing construction, you'll have to wait until it is finished in order to schedule the visit.
-
5
Sign and return the contract. Upon approval, BlueCross BlueShield will send you a welcome package, including a contract that you must sign and return in order to complete the process. This packet will also give you your National Provider Identifier and tell you the date that you can start accepting BCBS insurance.
