How to Add Air to an Exercise Ball
Exercise balls are popular pieces of exercise equipment--particularly for Pilates and core strength training exercises. In addition to making it easier to maintain proper alignment during repetitions, exercise balls increase the difficulty of the exercises by forcing you to use your balance. This means you work more muscles and work your muscles harder than you would otherwise. Prior to using an exercise ball, it is important to make sure it is properly inflated. Exercise balls may need to be re-inflated over time because air slowly leaks out during use.

1
Remove the plug from your exercise ball and lay the ball out flat on the floor. Open up as many creases as possible so the ball is easier to inflate.
-
2
Stick the tip of a ball pump into the open plug and begin pumping air into the exercise ball. If you don't have a ball pump, you can use a bike pump or air compressor, but you'll need to purchase a specialized tip and attach it to the pump. These tips are often sold alongside the exercise balls in stores.

3
Add air to the exercise ball until it is approximately 80 percent full. At this point, you should be able to stick your finger into the side of the ball and create a 6-inch deep indentation.
-
4
Allow the ball to sit undisturbed for 24 hours so the plastic walls have an opportunity to stretch. At this point, you can fully inflate the ball so it is firm, but not hard.

Tips & Warnings
To test the firmness of the ball, sit on it and confirm that your legs and hips create a 90 degree angle with the floor. You can also test the firmness of the ball by sticking your finger into the side of the ball. When filled correctly, it should indent approximately 2 inches. According to the Dummies website, "Your ball should feel firm and supportive but not tight like a drum."
