1
Purchase a healthy tree from the lot. This will give you an advantage from the start. A healthy tree has strong branches and a fresh smell, and only loses a small number of needles when you shake the branches.
-
2
Cut 1/2 to 1 inch off the bottom of the tree once you get it home. This fresh cut will allow more water to enter the trunk, keeping your tree fresher, longer.

3
Check your Christmas tree stand to ensure that there are no leaks. Place the tree into the stand and secure it. Fill the stand with fresh, plain water.
-
4
Put fresh water into the tree stand daily to ensure that it does not dry out. The tree will consume about 1 qt. of water each day.
-
5
Keep the tree away from heat sources such as vents, fireplaces, portable heaters and sunlight. This will prevent the tree from drying out too fast or catching fire.
-
6
If you have pets in your home, place safety gates around the tree to prevent your pets from drinking the tree's water.
