How to Cite an Online Newspaper in APA Format
As more newspapers move to the Internet, it has become increasingly common for research sources to come from web-based publications. The American Psychological Association has established guidelines to address how online newspapers should be cited.

In-Text Citation
-
1
Use the author-date citation system when applying the APA format to a body of work. The author's surname and the date of publication should be included so readers can reference the citation in the references section.
-
2
Include the surnames of every author credited for writing the article in the order in which their names appear. If there are six or more authors, only name the first author, and follow it with "et al." This rule applies to subsequent citations for any sources that have three or more authors.
-
-
3
Put the publication date in parentheses after the author's surname. This is not necessary if the publication date is referenced in the text.
In the References
-
4
Begin the reference by writing the author's surname followed by a comma and her first and middle initial (if applicable). If there are multiple authors, each person's surname and first initial should be included in the order in which they appear in the article.
-
5
Put the month, day and year of the article's publication date in parentheses directly after the author's name. A period should be placed after the last parenthesis.
-
6
Cite the complete name of the newspaper article in plain text and end with a period. No quotations or italic font should be used.
-
7
Put the name of the online newspaper in italics after the article's name. Insert a period after the name and follow it with the the phrase "Retrieved from" and the website of the online newspaper. To prevent broken links, use the newspaper's main web address.
